Culture Shock: Soft Drink Saga

Whether it's "soda" or "pop", it's Pepsi

Are ASU students connoisseurs of classic Coca Cola, or members of the Pepsi generation?

Regardless of their preferences, it appears that students are being forced into the latter category.

Over the summer, Pepsi beat out Coke for the contract on campus beverage vending machines, gaining control of the caffeine-fix fuelers for the next five years.

While Pepsi was already the only beverage available on tap in the Memorial Union, it will now also be the sole substance available in cans on campus. And even though you can still grab a 20-ounce bottle of Coke from locations like the Union Market in the MU, it's obvious that ASU just won't be the same.

To be clear, this section of SPM will usually be dedicated to an interesting aspect of Tempe's culture, a campus club or some other significant, diverse aspect of our area.

But what could currently be a more important shift in the campus culture than this soda sabotage?

One question remains: Will Pepsi's stay on campus parallel the life of its past spokeswoman, Britney Spears - starting off in the glow of publicity, only to come to a torrid, trashy end? The SPM staff sure hopes so - but only time will tell.
