Students find home in hotel

Ryan A. Ruiz / THE STATE PRESS
Coordinator for student development and activities Dora Valentin Tompkins leads a tour through the new residence hall in downtown Phoenix. The Ramada Inn on Van Buren Street and 1st street was converted to accomodate student living.
Students entering ASU downtown this fall will call the Ramada Inn Hotel home.

A tour of about 15 students and parents made its way through the site at 411 N. First St. on Thursday afternoon to visit the new dormitory at the cap of orientation.

While more changes will be made to the facility before move-in on August 17, students were able to preview a model dorm room, the spacious lobby, the cafeteria and meeting rooms during the tour.

Pepsi beats Coke cold

ASU has dropped Coca-Cola for Pepsi as the official soft drink of campus vending machines.

The decision, effective July 1, allowed Pepsi to replace Coke machines on all ASU campuses, and changes are expected to be complete by Aug. 17. Pepsi and Coca-Cola were the only companies to bid for the five-year contract.

Both ASU's Director of Purchasing and Business Services John Riley and Senior Buyer Lorie Sheppard said when it came down to granting the final contract award, the competition wasn't even close.

UPass gets students on board

As gas prices soar and construction compounds commute times, more and more ASU students are turning to public transportation to get them to and from campus.

Last year, ASU experimented with the Unlimited Access Bus Pass, a free option for students and faculty to ride the Valley Metro wherever and whenever they chose.

'Clerks II' stars dish dirt

The stars of the newly released "Clerks II" (left to right) Brian O'Halloran (Dante Hicks) and Jeff Anderson (Randal Graves), are more than colleagues - they are friends.
Sitting down with Brian O'Halloran (Dante Hicks) and Jeff Anderson (Randal Graves) of Kevin Smith's latest film, "Clerks II," is like sitting down with an old married couple: they both know each other inside out and each has their own stories and takes on many of the same experiences.

Coming back to their roots with a sequel to the movie that made them both part of a cult phenomenon over the past decade isn't so much a reunion as it is just another get-together for the two.
