Plus-sizes sexy at Torrid model search

Deanna Dent / THE STATE PRESS
29-year-old Kelly Jones strikes a pose for the Torrid photographer Saturday.
At 5 foot 10 inches, BIS senior Stephanie Melahn always wanted to be a model, but felt her size 22 figure prevented her from most modeling gigs.
But as she anxiously waited in line to get her portraits taken at Torrid's Model Search 2006 at Superstition Springs Mall Saturday morning, the 22-year-old economics and business major looked excited.
"There aren't many opportunities for girls my size," Melahn said. "And here, there's all different kinds of girls - from the girly-girls to the punk rockers."
Over 300 hopeful entrants turned out for the model search to get their portraits taken.

Loved, missed and remembered

When entering the large conference room Saturday evening there were tables decorated with mementos of children who passed away as recently as a few months ago and as long ago as 1996. Families stood proudly next to these tables quickly explaining how their child had passed from premature birth to SIDS to illnesses, while accepting embraces from parents and family members who understood their loss.

The M.I.S.S. Foundation and ASU's College of Human Services' Department of Social Work sponsored the conference, "When a Child Dies: The Vow to Remember, the Call to Comfort."

Softball: ASU falls short at College World Series

Deanna Dent / THE STATE PRESS
Sun Devil junior catcher Heidi Knabe is unable to make the catch and tag out the runner during practice earlier in the season. The Sun Devils were unable to grasp a national championship after falling to No. 8 Tennesse, 3-1 in extra innings.
After losing their opening round game to Texas last Thursday, the ASU softball team bounced back to defeat Oregon State and take Tennessee to extra innings on Saturday.
But in the end they couldn't survive the back-to-back elimination games at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Ore.

Sixth-seeded ASU (53-15, 11-10) fell 2-0 to No. 3 Texas, defeated No. 7 Oregon State 3-1 and lost 3-1 to No. 8 Tennessee in the team's fifth College World Series appearance.
