Tales from a Friday with ASU DPS

Joe Rondone / THE STATE PRESS
Officer Dave Lee talks to a suspect in custody for a previous warrent. The suspect was pulled over when police realized that his license plates had expired.

During a 12-hour shift, ASU police officers typically answer 10 to 20 calls, but Officer Jason Latella said the past two weeks have been busier than usual.

"It's early enough in the semester that no one has any big papers or anything, so they're partying now," Latella said.

Friday night and early Saturday morning, officers from the ASU Department of Public Safety handled 10 cases as a State Press reporter rode along.

State employees getting raise

ASU faculty and other state employees are going to see bigger paychecks starting in March.

Last week, Gov. Janet Napolitano signed House Bill 2661 into law, which will increase state employee pay by 6.3 percent.

Regents endorse 4-year degrees from community colleges

The Arizona Board of Regents has endorsed collaboration between the state's universities and community colleges that would allow colleges to offer four-year degrees.

But the agreement between the university system and the community colleges, which came after more than six months of discussion, does not mean that the issue will be approved by the state, said one Regent.

M Hoops Ironman Kruger carrying the load

Joe Rondone / THE STATE PRESS
Guard Kevin Kruger prepares to pass the ball during a game against Stanford earlier in the season.
ASU junior shooting guard Kevin Kruger probably doesn't even remember what the bench feels like.

Kruger has gone the distance, playing all 40 minutes in ASU's last three games, and is averaging 39.4 minutes in the last eight.

He leads the Pac-10 in minutes played per game at 38.4 and has recently played through the pain caused by inflamed wisdom teeth.

He is scheduled to have them removed today and will miss the next two practices, but is expected to be in the starting lineup against Oregon State on Thursday night.

Against USC on Saturday, Kruger had 14 points including 3-for-4 from 3-point range and added six rebounds with no turnovers.

Different Strokes

On the cover
A scattering of regular patrons mills about the dimly lit room, stopping to chat at the edge of the small stage. Some wander into the side room to view the black and white photos of women in g-strings and oil paintings of two nude women in seductive embraces.

The Paper Heart gallery is calm on this third Thursday of the month. This is the night where the artists who currently have their work on display at the gallery come together, chatting casually at the beer and wine bar. Chatting with them is the gallery's owner, who seems part artist, part rocker with his straight, dark, shoulder-length hair and his bright red jacket.

Sex: Banging in the Bathroom

Although it is a slow night at Maloney's Tavern in Tempe, a small line is beginning to form outside the women's restroom as four women impatiently wait for their turns. A man walking into the men's room across from them yells, "Hey is there sex in there?" His cackles echo as he closes the door to the men's room.

Dating: Foreign Policy

One week after making his way across the Atlantic, French exchange student Geoffrey Marx met an American girl at a party. He smiled and leaned in, greeting the girl with a kiss on either cheek of the normal French introduction.
