Playboy names ASU top party school

Alcohol, students going to class hung over, blonde hair from a bottle and skimpy -- if any -- clothing.

These are just a few of the stereotypes that helped land ASU on Playboy's list of top party schools in the May 2006 issue -- despite administrators' efforts to revamp the University's image. The results were announced Sept. 29.

Meal plan passed to administration

Undergraduate Student Government President Yaser Alamoodi vetoed the USG Senate's approval of the mandatory meal plan proposal early Monday while drinking his morning coffee.

"I wanted to maintain the students' best interests," he said. "The meal plan, as proposed, is harmful as it stands."

Alamoodi's veto comes the same day the meal-plan committee passed the proposal on to Vice President of Student Affairs Sally Ramage for approval. The meal plan does not need USG's consent, but does need Ramage's OK, before going to the Arizona Board of Regents for a vote.

Football: Carpenter winning awards, Devils' confidence

The redshirt freshman, who became the starter after news of Sam Keller's season-ending thumb injury, earned Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week honors with his performance against Washington Saturday.

Get it Out

Jacie* lounges comfortably on a cream-colored leather chair just weeks before she will have the sexual reassignment surgery necessary for her to become a woman. The political science and history sophomore pushes back her dark, red-highlighted hair as she recalls how a fundamentalist Christian counselor caused her a painful bout of depression and self-doubt over her status as a male-to-female transsexual.

"Doctors aren't supposed to fuck with your head and play games," Jacie says. "That's nowhere in the Hippocratic oath."

Her feminine voice rises in volume as she describes the mental scars the therapy left behind.

Fashion: Do or Do Not

Yes, ASU is a land of perpetual summer, but when temperatures dip below 90 degrees and rain starts falling on the malls, it's probably time to ditch the white tank tops and miniskirts that leave oh-so-little to the imagination.

Instead of confusing campus with a nudist colony, embrace layering and the wealth of winter-month fashions from which summer has so cruelly deprived us.
