Agape
Agape
(Self-released)
3 out of 5 stars

There are a good amount of bands taking the electronic dance music vibe and tweaking it a little to produce something wickedly twisted but still fun. The Faint does it without seeming ironic or clichéd. An Albatross manages to mangle keyboard synth-pop until it's barely recognizable in bursts of noise (yet still undeniably a good time). And I don't think anybody knows what the Liars are doing, but there's definitely a dance vibe going on there as well. Agape falls somewhere in between these three. The five songs on their self-titled record blend into one long, sweaty session of foot-stomping beats and pulsating keyboard lines with screeched vocals. Ultimately, it comes off as an unexpectedly fun listen, but one that leaves the listener wanting a little more substance.

Toshi Reagon
Have you Heard
(Righteous Babe)
3 out of 5 stars

Toshi Reagon just released her eighth album, and you've never heard of her, which makes Have You Heard a rather ironic title. The combination of folk, country and blues is so full of soul you'll imagine yourself in a smoky underground bar in the South, sipping straight whiskey out of a chipped glass and reminiscing about "the good ol' days" with a man called "Blind" Willie Harrison. The power of Reagon's vocals in range and manipulation is enchanting, while the music varies from soothing ("Trying to Bring Love Home") to highly energetic ("Have You Heard"). Have You Heard is Reagon's first release on Righteous Babe Records, and you would be hard-pressed to find a more appropriate label.
