Solar panels power parking structures

Chris Atwood / THE STATE PRESS
Solar-powered laminates on ASU's Parking Structure 2 add shade for parking while converting sunlight to electrical power. As part of ASU's self-sustaining efforts, the solar energy created by the panels is enough to power every light in the structure.
Students have 44 extra covered parking spaces in Parking Structure 2, thanks to solar-powered laminates installed in March.

The solar-powered laminates add shade and convert sunlight to electrical power by activating electrons that flow through semi-conductors, said Ray Tena, assistant director for engineering and design services for Capital Programs Management. The solar panels power the lights in Structure 2, which is located at McAllister Avenue and Tyler Street.

Public records access topic of forum

Defending privacy and the right to public information were the topics of debate at a roundtable discussion on public records Tuesday, featuring a cornucopia of lawyers, journalists and government officials.

The event was put on by Associated Press Managing Editors at the College of Law in an effort to increase discussion on the issue of media access to public records.

ASU police warn of 'smash and grabs'

ASU police are cautioning students to remove or conceal valuables in their vehicles to prevent burglaries when parking on campus.

In Structure 5, there have been at least 16 burglaries in the last month, roughly the same amount as in all other campus parking areas combined.

Former Sun Devils star Eddie House signed a two-year deal with the Suns on Monday, marking his return to the state where he first rose to prominence. House - the Pac-10 player of the year in his senior season at ASU - narrowed his choices to Miami and Phoenix before choosing the run-and-gun Suns.

On the Outside: These students refuse...

Deanna Dent / STATE PRESS MAGAZINE
"Racial outsiders are people who show characteristics that are viewed as different from their inherent racial and cultural norms."

Mazeratie Stephens-Sweet has a high, singsong voice with a slight "valley girl" accent. She manages to include the words "like" and "whatever" into almost every sentence. On the phone, she sounds like your average white, suburban-bred, college student. But sounds can be deceiving.

Meet three ASU students who feel nothing like how they look -- Stephens-Sweet, along with Chris Ly and Ching Phuong, say they are racial and cultural outsiders: students who say they feel more comfortable socializing with people from a different race than their own.
