Tempe council hopefuls launch campaigns

Corey Woods, an ASU graduate student in the College of Education, is running for Tempe City Council. He was invited by the ASU Young Democrats to speak to students outside of the Memorial Union yesterday.
Two city council hopefuls with ASU ties announced their bids for office and chatted with students about community issues Thursday.

Kevin Bondelli and Corey Woods, who both plan to run for Tempe City Council in March, launched their on-campus campaigns at a rally hosted by ASU's Young Democrats.

Bondelli graduated from ASU in August with a degree in political science. Woods is working on a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies.

Displaced students welcomed

Students relocated to ASU from universities affected by Hurricane Katrina got the chance to meet with each other and learn about ASU at a special mini-orientation session Thursday.

The offices of Undergraduate Admissions and Student Affairs organized the orientation, which is similar to the Sun Devil 101 program offered to all incoming freshmen.

Body discovered in apartment complex

A woman was found dead in the parking lot of a Tempe apartment complex early Thursday morning, an incident police are considering a homicide.

Police responded to the Saddle Club Apartments, 3730 S. Mill Ave., at approximately 1 a.m. after a resident called and reported finding a body, said Tempe Sgt. Dan Masters.

56,000 already sold; officials hope to sell out

In the three days since announcing that LSU would be coming to Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday, 56,000 tickets to the game have been sold.

Approximately 25,000 seats were available to the public as of Thursday morning. ASU officials opened the public ticket sales at 9 a.m. Thursday. Sales will run through halftime on Saturday, unless the venue has been sold out.

After a 1-4 start to the season, the ASU volleyball team remains optimistic heading into its home opener today in the Tempe Wyndham Buttes Volleyball Classic at Wells Fargo Arena.

Mazeratie Stephens-Sweet has a high, singsong voice with a slight "valley girl" accent. She manages to include the words "like" and "whatever" into almost every sentence. On the phone, she sounds like your average white, suburban-bred, college student. But sounds can be deceiving.

Meet three ASU students who feel nothing like how they look -- Stephens-Sweet, along with Chris Ly and Ching Phuong, say they are racial and cultural outsiders: students who say they feel more comfortable socializing with people from a different race than their own.
