Report: Athletic director to leave ASU

An ASU spokesperson dispelled reports Thursday that have Athletic Director Gene Smith headed to Ohio State. Mark Brand, assistant athletic director for media relations, said Smith would not comment on the prospect of going to Ohio State because he doesn't want to compromise the integrity of Ohio State's search.

Smith, a Cleveland native, is rumored to be the leading candidate for the athletic director position at Ohio State and could be hired as early as today, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

Scholarships make switch to cash awards

Next year's freshman class will turn in tuition waivers for cold hard cash.

James Rund, vice president of University Undergraduate Initiatives, said the University would stop offering waivers in favor of cash awards to make the value of scholarships more precise.

Ike Diogu, left, and the rest of the Sun Devils will attempt to score an upset over rival UA on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.
The ASU men's basketball team has a chance to rectify all the mishaps and heartbreaks it has suffered this season.

A win Saturday over No. 11 UA probably won't be enough for ASU to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, but the Sun Devils can recoup some of the respectability they've lost.

Devils making cry for respect

What does the ASU women's basketball team have to do to get some respect?

The Sun Devils already have secured their third 20-win season under fast-rising coach Charli Turner Thorne. They finished tied for second place in the Pac-10. And they went 12-1 at home, losing only to then-No. 8 Stanford.

Muscles rippling, Holly Dison contorts her body and grips a sketchy pocket on the wall with her fingers.

She wraps her right leg around the back of her left, delicately balancing on a sliver of rock the size of a baby carrot. Her lithe body is completely taut as she grabs a good-sized slab and holds on tight. Finally, she drops onto the padded ground with a soft thud and announces she is starting to feel warmed up.

The Latest: Shopping at the Sexy Safeway

Candace Coffey and Lauren Vanantwerp walk in Safeway dressed like models in an Abercrombie and Fitch ad. The freshmen are shopping for their weekly groceries, but at this supermarket -- also known as the Sexy Safeway -- they might just find dates, too.

As the closest grocery store to ASU, the Safeway on Broadway and Rural roads is a natural hot spot for hot coeds. But oftentimes, students go there for the specific purpose of scoping out the opposite sex rather than loaves of bread.
