The master plan heads downtown

The ASU downtown campus is now known as the Capital Center.
The change that has been promised for so long is finally beginning to take shape.

Since the advent of ASU President Michael Crow's tenure in 2002, he has had the plan to change ASU from what it is -- a successful regional university serving the needs of the Southwest -- to what it could be -- a Research I university in the ranks of Harvard, Stanford and Crow's old school, Columbia University in New York City.

Developer chosen for Gateway project

On Tuesday, ASU President Michael Crow announced that real estate developer Concord Eastridge Inc. will build the 13-acre Arts and Business Gateway District on the corner of University Drive and Mill Avenue.

The project is estimated to cost between $400 million and $500 million. Construction should begin in 2006.

Briefs: Banda heads to Olympics

ASU track and field's Lewis Banda, a native of Zimbabwe, was announced last week as one of just 11 total athletes from his homeland who will compete in next month's Olympic Games. Banda, a five-time All-American and four-time Pac-10 champion, will be one of five men to represent his country in track and field.
